Sip Into Some New Places
May 21, 2009
Tired of the same old places to sip your wine? Why not try something different.
Send your taste buds packing to the World Culinary Travel Expo, May 22 to 24 at BC Place Stadium. Exhibitors include wineries and beer manufacturers, in addition to tourism boards, airlines, restaurants, hotels, attractions and many more. Tickets at the box office are $15, or you can save $3 by booking online. There’s plenty of time over the weekend to check it out: Friday from 4pm until 9pm, Saturday from 11am until 9pm, or Sunday from 11am until 5pm.
For the flavour of home, check out the South Okanagan Wineries Association Kitchen Party, Tuesday May 26th at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts (1505 West 2nd Avenue). The $77 ticket allows you to sample wines from about 20 local wineries while munching of eats from top local restaurants. The event is from 6:30pm until 9 and some of the take will help support the Osoyoos Desert Society.
You can drink wine for a good cause at Everything Wine in North Vancouver on Wednesday, May 27th from 7:30 to 9:30. Your $30 ticket will help to support the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. In addition to sampling wines, there will be charcuterie, cheese, a silent action and a 5% discount all night on wine! Get your tickets 24 hours in advance.
A trip to the vineyards of New Zealand is only as far as the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre (999 Canada Place) on Thursday, May 28th. The Vancouver New Zealand Wine Fair allows you to sample a selection of New Zealand wines that are availabe on the BC market, along with cheese and nibbles. For a $55 ticket, you can sip from 7pm until 9:30pm.
Why not head out to Pacific Cinémathèque (1131 Howe Street) for Cinebar — films paired with wine from the same country. June 12th you can check out La Strada, a 1954 flick in which the free-spirited Gelsomina (Guilietta Masina) is sold to a boorish travelling circus performer, Zampano (Anthony Quinn). The Folonari Pinot Grigio should take the edge off Gelsomina’s enduring physical and emotional pain along the way. The $9.50 adult ticket includes the glass of wine. The Oscar-winning black-and-white is in Italian.
