10 Wild Things to See and Do in Japan

July 5, 2008 by

In the news lately and it seems the wild stories are coming out of Japan. The first newsy tidbit I noticed was a story of a man who was so aroused by the sound of a woman’s voice on an automated guidance service that he called the food company’s toll-free number 500 times. He was arrested after 16 months of calls and $38,730 in phone bills, according to police in Takasaki.

Next, some Narita airport customs officer stuffed a pack of weed into the baggage of a traveller for sniffer dogs to find. But the dogs didn’t find it. That’s some souvenir!

Then I read about how a 58-year-old woman in Fukuoka got busted for living in an unused closet at a stranger’s house. She was discovered by a secret camera after several months of the home owner wondering why his food was going missing.

When I read about the crazed man who drove into pedestrians in Tokyo’s Akihabara “electric town,” leapt from his truck and stabbed seven people to death I had to ask “what is going on with people in Japan?”

If you are planning a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun, perhaps you would like to do something a little wild. Although I don’t recommend any of the above exploits which will result in jail time, I have a list of 10 things that will make good stories to tell the folks back home.
