3. See Snow Monkeys Bathe in Hot Springs
Monkeys picking each other’s knits while nestled in a hot spring bath that is skirted by snow – who could resist this photo opportunity? Not many photographers in Japan, so be prepared for some competition when you try to get that great close-up shot of the Japanese Macaque.
Jigokudani Yaenkoen, or “Monkey Park” to foreigners, is a natural hot spring at an elevation of 850 metres and covered in snow about a third of the year.
It’s an easy day trip from Nagano and there are many ryokans (traditional Japanese hotels) in the towns of Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen. Most of the areas guest houses offer onsens (hot spring baths) for humans to enjoy. With or without monkeys.
