Herder

Herder was not yet open in their new location when we visited the Similkameen in the spring. But we made sure to look them up when we were back later in the summer. And they still have plenty of wine in stock, perhaps due to their late opening.
We were happy to try them out. And they delivered. Of the five wines I tried, I was able to narrow down my picks to the top three.
The first wine I tried may well have been my favourite. Their 2007 Pinot Gris ($19.00) “should be enjoyed with friends” the tasting notes tell you. It is hard to argue with that. It’s fun, crisp and un-oaked.
The 2007 Three Sisters ($20) blends Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewurtztraminer and Viognier, so why it’s not called four sisters is beyond me. Dispite the number of girls, she’s a tasty sipper with nice acidity.
The 2006 Pinot Noir ($30.00) is a very clean wine with a sensuous nose of plum and cherry. The tannins are light so it doesn’t have the bitter character that sometimes puts me off pinots. I enjoyed a full glass a few nights later and it cemented my original opinion: this is a worthwhile bottle.
The quirk about the grand Herder digs is that it’s also their family home. You can see into the kitchen when you stand at the tasting counter. You might hear their kids playing video games in the back room. When you use the bathroom, you’ll notice the kids’ shampoo in the bathtub. It’s that small-town lack of pretentiousness that really makes the experience.
